In 2015 a group of service providers from the Mirrabooka region set up the Shine a Light for Kakuma project to increase awareness about the plight of refugees. The objective was to share information and stories about people from refugee backgrounds and create a greater sense of compassion and respect towards refugee communities. Last year we raised $15,000 to purchase much needed resources for communities in Kenya and Rwanda. The project has been a huge success, increasing knowledge in the community and improving the capacity of service providers to support refugee communities and make a positive difference for the lives of people in refugee and disadvantaged communities.

In Kakuma refugee camp we provided a thousand solar lanterns to young people to assist them to study and alleviate the need for them to use harmful kerosene lanterns. There are over 20,000 school students packed in to 30 primary schools and 4 senior schools.

Additionally, there is very limited, affordable legal assistance available for approximately 2,000 people seeking asylum who arrived by boat between August 2012 and December 2013 and currently live in Western Australia. These people are subject to a new fast track assessment process to determine their eligibility to seek protection in Australia by way of a temporary visa.

We are going to purchase additional lanterns to assist these young people to overcome the adversity they face and build a better future for us all.

Also to assist those asylum seekers that are currently living among us and ensure they have the best possible chance at starting a new life, we are contributing funds towards the A Fair Go for Asylum Seekers Appeal. This Appeal supports The Humanitarian Group in providing essential legal services to highly vulnerable asylum seekers and seeks to set them on a path to healing and future prosperity.

50% of funds raised will go to purchasing lanterns for young people in Kakuma and the other 50% will go to the A Fair Go for Asylum Seekers Appeal.

By donating to this cause you will be making a significant difference to people in need.
